12th/16th Hunter River Lancers: 75th Anniversary and Recent History

Post World War 2 and 75th Anniversary

The CMF was reformed in 1948, establishing the 12/16 Hunter River Lancers, incorporating the 12th, 16th, and 24th Light Horse Regiments traditions. Initially equipped with Matilda tanks, the unit transitioned to Staghound Armoured Cars in 1952.

In 1960, the Regiment's role shifted to an APC Regiment, equipped first with Humber 4x4 one-ton trucks, then White APCs, and finally M113A1 vehicles. In 1972, the Regiment's role changed to a RAAC Regiment, comprising RHQ, HQ Squadron, a Cavalry Squadron (A Squadron), and an APC Squadron (B Squadron).

Since 2007, the 12/16 Hunter River Lancers have operated in a Light Cavalry role, employing the Protected Mobility Vehicle (PMV). As the Regiment celebrates its 75th anniversary, it remains essential to the Australian Defence Force's reserve units.
