How to Set Up Chest Rig for Real Field Use

A chest rig earns its place when it lets you get to essential gear without digging through a pack, fouling a sling, or carrying dead weight across rough ground. Knowing how to set up chest rig equipment properly starts with one hard rule: build for the job in front of you, not for a photo or someone else’s loadout.

A rig for a range session, security shift, vehicle patrol, hunting trip or long walk in the bush may look similar at first glance. In practice, the gear you need immediately, the time you are wearing it and the environment all change the setup. Keep it simple, test it under movement, then remove anything that does not earn its space.

Start With the Mission, Not the Pouches

Before attaching a single pouch, define what the rig must do. Is it a lightweight standalone platform for a range day? Is it worn over layers during a cold Canberra morning? Does it need to work with a pack, body armour, a radio, or a vehicle seat? Those answers decide the layout.

For a general-purpose field rig, prioritise items that need to be accessed while standing, kneeling or moving: magazines where relevant to your lawful role and training, navigation tools, comms, a compact first aid component, gloves, torch and a small admin item. Sustenance, spare clothing and bulkier medical supplies normally belong in a pack or vehicle, not across your chest.

The common mistake is treating available MOLLE space as a requirement to fill it. It is not. Every extra pouch adds weight, catches on straps and makes the rig more awkward when prone. A lean chest rig is faster to use and easier to live with.

Build the Core Layout First

Set up the centre of the rig around the items you reach for most often. For many users, that means magazine retention cells or a low-profile utility arrangement. Keep the centreline as flat as practical. A large, overstuffed pouch in the middle can make going prone uncomfortable and push the rig into your throat when you bend or sit.

Place frequently used items where your hands naturally land. Right-handed users often prefer primary access items slightly to the left of centre, leaving the dominant hand free to work. Left-handed users may mirror that arrangement. There is no prize for copying a standard layout that does not suit your body mechanics.

Keep like items together where it makes sense. Your navigation tools should not be split across three pouches, and your medical gear should be clearly identifiable rather than mixed with general admin clutter. Under pressure, familiar placement matters more than a clever-looking setup.

Retention needs to match the activity

Open-top elastic retention is quick and keeps the rig trim, but it may not suit hard vehicle work, scrambling, running or dense scrub unless the item is held securely. Flapped pouches offer more protection from dust, rain and accidental loss, though they are slower to access.

A balanced setup often uses fast retention for the highest-priority items and enclosed storage for equipment used less often. Test this properly. Jog, crawl, climb in and out of a vehicle, get low behind cover and work through your normal drills. If gear shifts, rattles or falls out, the setup is not ready.

How to Set Up Chest Rig Straps for Comfort

Pouch placement gets attention, but strap adjustment decides whether you can wear the rig for an hour or all day. Start with all straps slightly loose. Put the rig on over the clothing you expect to wear most often, then tighten it in small stages.

The rig should sit high enough that it does not bang into your belt line or stomach when moving, but not so high that it restricts your neck, interferes with a rifle stock or rides up when you sit. As a practical starting point, the bottom edge should sit clear of your belt and the top should leave room for natural shoulder movement.

Adjust the shoulder straps evenly before pulling in the side straps. If you overtighten the waist section first, the rig can pinch your ribs and shift upward. Once it is secure, move your arms through full range, take a knee, lie prone and sit in a vehicle. Pay attention to pressure points under pack straps and where the harness meets the neck.

Do not crank the rig down like a tourniquet. It needs to stay stable without restricting breathing, especially when you are working uphill, carrying a pack or wearing insulation layers. If it swings and bounces, tighten it incrementally or reduce the load. If it feels restrictive, reassess the pouch layout before simply loosening everything.

Make It Work With Your Other Gear

A chest rig rarely operates alone. It has to coexist with belts, packs, outerwear, radios and sometimes armour. Check the system as a whole before calling it done.

If you wear a belt kit, avoid putting bulky items on the lower edge of the rig where they collide with belt pouches while seated or crouched. If you run a daypack, keep the rear harness tidy and low-profile so pack shoulder straps do not stack on top of buckles, webbing and hard attachment points.

For users who wear the rig over armour, fit it with the armour on. A setup adjusted over a T-shirt will sit completely differently over plates or a thick winter layer. Likewise, a rig set up for bushwalking may need a slimmer profile for driving or working in close spaces.

Comms equipment deserves deliberate placement. A radio needs a secure pouch, an antenna route that does not snag, and a push-to-talk position you can reach without looking. Run cables close to the harness and secure excess length. Loose cable is a snag hazard and an annoyance you will notice every time you move.

Carry Medical Gear Where You Can Actually Reach It

Medical equipment should be accessible, protected and easy to identify by touch. A compact first aid pouch can sit on the side of a rig if it does not interfere with arm movement or pack straps. For many people, a belt-mounted kit or pack-based kit is the better option, especially when the chest rig is already carrying high-priority equipment.

Wherever it sits, make sure you can access it with either hand where possible. More importantly, train with the gear you carry and follow the requirements of your workplace, unit or course. Carrying medical gear without knowing how to use it is not a preparedness plan.

Test the Rig Before You Trust It

Your first layout is only a starting point. Wear the rig around the house, then take it on a proper training session or field walk. Load it as you would in use, including water, gloves, weather layers and the items that normally end up in your pockets.

Look for the failures that only show up in motion: pouches digging into your ribs, straps loosening, items blocking access to others, buckles rubbing under a pack, or gear making too much noise. Make one change at a time so you know what fixed the problem.

A useful check is to run through ordinary tasks without looking down. Can you retrieve your torch, gloves, navigation aid and first aid kit? Can you get into a vehicle, shoulder a pack and lie prone? Can you put the rig on in low light without fighting tangled straps? If not, simplify it.

Avoid the Overloaded Chest Rig

The fastest way to ruin a good platform is loading it with every tool you own. Excess weight causes shoulder fatigue, traps heat, reduces mobility and turns simple access into a mess. It also encourages you to carry gear because there is room, rather than because there is a real need.

Keep the chest rig for immediate essentials. Put sustainment and contingency gear in your pack. Use your pockets for small, low-risk items. That division keeps the rig useful when you need to move fast, shed layers or work from a vehicle.

Field-proven gear is only part of the equation. The layout, fit and repetition are what make it dependable. Set it up for your role, wear it hard, and let real use tell you what stays and what gets binned.
